Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed as a young little girl. This forced her mother to support her family through work as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth went to school in Boston's poorest tenement area. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then going on to pursue an acting career. The path she chose to take turned out to be filled with challenges: In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills for a magazine about crime, but theatrical work eluded her. Following a short stint as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. As an usherette, she worked during the early morning hours and also appeared at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first acting position that was permanent. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
